Bandwidth

In this guide, you will learn about transferred data (bandwidth) and how it works within Webnode services. You will also find information about what to do if you exceed your bandwidth limit. 

Transferred data

Transferred data is the sum of all data (in GB or MB) transferred between Webnode servers and the devices of your website visitors. This includes all the content on the pages, such as text, images and other files necessary to make your pages visible. The more pages a visitor opens, the more data is transferred, resulting in an increase in the total amount of transferred data. Data is also transferred while you are working within the editor itself.  

With every action taken by a visitor to the website, the server sends data to the visitor and vice versa. Data takes up server space and therefore incurs cost.

For larger and more comprehensive websites, more data is transferred.  

The data transfer limit depends on the Premium Plan that you have purchased from us. Free websites and lower tier Premium Plans have limited bandwidth.  

Calculation of transferred data and bandwidth usage

In general, high traffic plus a lot of content equals high bandwidth. An approximate calculation of your bandwidth usage can be: Monthly bandwidth = average size of one website subpage (in MB) × average monthly website traffic × average page views per user.  

(This calculation is very indicative, if the visitor opens the page once, certain data is stored in the browser cache and not all information and data are downloaded again each time.)

You can monitor the transferred data directly in the editor, where you click on Settings

Transferred data and storage usage are closely related—the more content you have on your website, the sooner the bandwidth limit will be reached. The largest use of bandwidth will typically be background photos and videos loaded from Webnode servers.  

Bandwidth limit exceeded

Exceeding the limit occurs when a high number of people visit your website, and large amounts of data is transferred. This may result in a larger volume being transferred than is included in your current package. At the same time, this is a monthly limit, which means that it will reset at the beginning of the next calendar month.  

After exceeding the bandwidth limit, your website may not work normally. Your site may load more slowly, images may not appear in high resolution, or the site may be blocked if the limit is repeatedly exceeded.

We will contact you in advance via email (project owner's email address) about an approaching bandwidth limit. We will also email you when the limit is reached. If the website is blocked due to exceeding the bandwidth limit, it is necessary to wait until the beginning of the next month, or to purchase a higher Premium Plan. If you already have a Premium Plan, you can upgrade it according to the instructions How to renew or upgrade a premium package. If you already have a Premium Plan, you only pay the price difference for your upgrade.  

TIP: If you are not interested in upgrading to a higher plan, you can minimize and limit the content of your website by:

• compressing the size and resolution of images on your website

• shortening and distributing the content of the website to additional pages  

• deleting downloadable files

• removing contact forms

TIP: Images and videos from the Webnode gallery often have a very high resolution to be usable on the background of the pages - we recommend using your own videos and images, especially on the background of the pages, where the original quality and size of the source file is preserved.
